CAIS Research Scientist Mantas Mazeika Appointed to the EU AI Act Scientific Panel
We are pleased to announce that Mantas Mazeika, Research Scientist at CAIS, has been appointed to the European Commission's AI Act Scientific Panel, the independent body established under the EU AI Act to advise the European AI Office and national authorities on general-purpose AI (GPAI) models and systems.
The Scientific Panel provides technical guidance on systemic risk assessment, model classification, evaluation methodologies, and cross-border market surveillance. The panel’s 60 members are carefully selected for their expertise in areas including model evaluation, risk assessment and mitigation, and emerging risks from frontier AI systems.
Mantas joined CAIS in 2024 and has contributed to some of the field's most widely cited work, including research on catastrophic AI risks, tamper-resistant safeguards for open-weight models, and the WMDP benchmark for measuring and reducing malicious use. His work spans robustness, machine ethics, and capability evaluation.
CAIS's mission is to ensure that AI safety research translates into the governance structures that shape how powerful AI systems are built and deployed. The panel's mandate sits squarely within that objective, and we look forward to seeing its work inform how frontier AI is governed in Europe and beyond.
